DESCRIPTION:Flags for Fallen Vets \nVOLUNTEER UPDATE: We have reached our volunteer capacity for Flag Placement on Sunday\, May 30. Thank you to everyone who is will be helping with this special day of service. We are still in need of volunteers for Flag Recovery on Saturday\, June 5 (details below). \nFlag Placement: On the day before Memorial Day the Houston A&M Club joins thousands of other volunteers to place over 80\,000 flags at Houston National Cemetary. No matter the weather\, all flags go out or none. \nThis year’s Flag Placement will take place on: \nDate: Sunday\, May 30 \nLocation: Houston National Cemetery\, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr. Houston\, TX 77038. \nWe will meet and start at Sections U/U1’U2 (at the back of cemetery) CLICK HERE to link to the Houston National Cemetery site and click on “Cemetary Map” on the right side of the page. \nArrival Time: 8:00 a.m. \nFlag Placement: 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. (approximately) \nAdditional Information: Please wear your Maroon and White\, bring TOOLS that can make a hole in the ground (e.g. Phillips head #3 screwdriver\, or any rod the diameter of your little finger) and make sure to bring your water. \nTo join us for this special morning of service please contact Jim Thorpe ’78 at thorpejim@comcast.net by Friday\, May 28. \nFlag Recovery: Saturday\, June 5 @ 9:00 a.m. (please let Jim know if you’d like to volunteer with effort as well) \nSpecial note: There are 27 Aggies interned at this Cemetery. After initial flag placement\, a special group of Ags will place a small ATM flag at each grave site. \nIf you cannot participate in person that day\, but would still like to help\, please consider contributing to Flagsforfallenvets.com for the Houston National Cemetery. DESCRIPTION:AGE REQUIREMENTS at the Warehouse\, 6 years old chaperoned\, 15 years old unchaperoned. \nCome join us the First Tuesday of each month at the Houston Food Bank\, where we will be working on various projects\, such as assembling community food boxes and back pack buddy bags. Anyone that wants to join us is welcome. Wear your Aggie gear and please grab any Longhorns and any other school’s alumni\, friends\, family or coworkers that are aimlessly wondering what to do on a Tuesday. \nWhen you arrive look for William Wade ’73 who will be fully decked out in Aggie gear including a 12th Man towel. \nStarting on Tuesday\, March 2\, 2021\, we will be welcoming Aggies ALL DAY on first Tuesdays with the following shifts: \nMorning Shift: 8:00 a.m. – Noon \nAfternoon Shift: 1:00-4:30 p.m. (Currently Not Available) \nEvening Shift: 6-9:00 p.m. \nDon’t forget that this can be used toward volunteering community service hours for those in high school\, college and other community organizations. By registering in the Food Bank’s system\, the hours can be tracked throughout the year and downloaded at any time or pickup the certificate at the end of each shift before you leave. \nFamilies (with anyone age 6 years or older) and friends are welcome. Since it is a warehouse environment\, everyone must wear closed-toe shoes (no sling-backs)\, long shorts (to the knee) or pants\, and no low cut tops (OSHA regulations). If you would like to sign up or have questions\, please contact Jim Thorpe ’78.  Click here for more information on the Food Bank. \nDirections to location: Take I-10 east\, exit 774\, Gellhorn Dr (after McCarty St\, before 610 East Loop).  U-turn to feeder road heading west.  Turn right on Portwall St (green Houston Food Bank sign)\, turn right into parking lot in front of light green building (same area as HFB trucks and loading docks).  Park at the far end of the lot\, by the main entrance. \nRegister with the Houston Food Bank website for this shift by clicking here.  (Be sure to save the information for future registration). \nEvery Adult must register in their system before volunteering.  Please share this link with adult volunteers in order to register with our group. \nMinors (6 to 15 years old) will need a minor waiver form. These can be filled out at the front desk or contact Jim Thorpe to have one emailed to you.
