SUMMARY:Food Bank 2020
DESCRIPTION:AGE REQUIREMENTS at the Warehouse\, 6 years old chaperoned\, 15 years old unchaperoned. \nCome join us the First Tuesday of each month at the Houston Food Bank\, where we will be working on various projects\, such as assembling community food boxes and back pack buddy bags. Anyone that wants to join us is welcome. So please grab any Longhorns and any other school’s alumni\, friends\, family or coworkers that are aimlessly wondering what to do on a Tuesday night. \nDon’t forget that this can be used toward volunteering community service hours for those in high school\, college and other community organizations. By registering in the Food Bank’s system\, the hours can be tracked throughout the year and downloaded at any time or pickup the a certificate at the end of each shift before you leave. \nFamilies (with anyone age 6 years or older) and friends are welcome. Since it is a warehouse environment\, everyone must wear closed-toe shoes (no sling-backs)\, long shorts (to the knee) or pants\, and no low cut tops (OSHA regulations). If you would like to sign up or have questions\, please contact Jim Thorpe ’78.  Click here for more information on the Food Bank. \nDirections to location: Take I-10 east\, exit 774\, Gellhorn Dr (after McCarty St\, before 610 East Loop).  U-turn to feeder road heading west.  Turn right on Portwall St (green Houston Food Bank sign)\, turn right into parking lot in front of light green building (same area as HFB trucks and loading docks).  Park at the far end of the lot\, by the main entrance. \nRegister with the Houston Food Bank website for this shift by clicking here.  (Be save to save the information for future registration). \nEvery Adult must register in their system before volunteering.  Please share this link with adult volunteers in order to register with our group. \nMinors (6 to 15 years old) will need a minor waiver form. These can be filled out at the front desk or contact Jim Thorpe to have one emailed to you.

DESCRIPTION:Traditions Lunch – Brian Greene\, President & CEO Houston Food Bank \nSponsored by Brent Vannoy ’88\, Partner\, Hughes Watters Askanase \n \nDate: 2nd Monday\, March 9th\, 2020 \nTime: 11:30 Networking\, Lunch from Noon to 1 p.m. \nWhere: Grotto\, 4715 Westheimer Rd\, Houston\, TX 77027 \nCost: $25 covers both lunch and dessert \nParking: valet or complimentary \n  \nBrian Greene\, President & CEO Houston Food Bank \nBrian Greene is President and CEO of the Houston Food Bank\, the largest Feeding America food bank in\nthe nation. Over the last year\, the Food Bank distributed 104 million nutritious meals through its\nnetwork of 1\,500 community partners\, including food pantries\, soup kitchens\, social service providers\,\nand schools in southeast Texas. \nSince taking the top post at the Houston Food Bank in 2005\, Greene has led the organization to\nunprecedented growth. In August 2011\, the Food Bank moved into its current home\, a 308\,000 square-\nfoot warehouse and office facility\, purchased and renovated following completion of a $55.6 million\ncapital campaign. \nIn fall 2008\, the End Hunger Network\, a Houston-area food rescue organization\, merged with Houston\nFood Bank. Through Greene’s leadership\, HFB programs have expanded to feed more children and tap\ninto additional sources for food donations. In early 2016\, a second capital campaign was approved for\n$2.6 million to build a new home for the Keegan Kitchen inside the Houston Food Bank headquarters. \nIn April 2019\, Greene received the John van Hengel Fellowship award at Feeding America’s 2019\nHunger’s Hope Awards. The award recognizes an executive of a member food bank for his or her\nexcellence in leadership\, local impact and national influence\, and entrepreneurial spirit in the area of\nhunger relief. \nBefore moving to Houston\, Greene was the executive director of the Second Harvest Food Bank of\nGreater New Orleans and Acadiana for 12 years. In the five years prior\, he held the same position at the\nSecond Harvest Food Bank in Knoxville\, Tennessee. \nIn addition to a successful and respected career\, Greene has served on numerous Feeding America\nNetwork committees\, the National Council and on Feeding America’s Board. Outside of his food bank\nrole\, he has been active in the Global Food Bank Network and is an adjunct professor and serves as an\nAdvisory Board Member for University of Houston Downtown’s College of Humanities and Social\nSciences. \nGreene received a BA in Economics from Humboldt State University and an MA in Economics from the\nUniversity of Tennessee. \n \n\n\nClick here to buy tickets\nSell tickets online with Ticket Tailor
